L’esser viu més gran del planeta

UN MÓN DE NATURA

  Al contrari del que molta gen pensa, la balena blava no és l’ésser viu més gros del planeta: actualment hi ha el fong sapròfit comestible Armillaria ostoyae (anomenat “bolet de la mel”) que viu a un parc nacional dels Estats Units i que és, l’ésser viu més gran del planeta.
Se’l coneixia des de fa algun temps, però no s’havia descobert, fins fa poc, que de lo gran i immens que era aquesta espècie de fongs, era el responsable de la mort de grans masses d’arbres perennes. Aquest fong medeix més de 5 kilòmetres de llarg i el seu pes s’estima que pot superar les 7000 tonelades.

 

En un cas, quan els silvicultors van tallar un arbre infectat, van descobrir en el seu interior filaments extensibles de color blanc, anomenats micelis, que extreien aigua i carbohidrats de l’arbre per a alimentar el fong.

The TILA virtual world has its own shopping mall where all inhabitant can find clothing and even a great collection of furry suits to wear.

Outlet Womenswear shopAt the Welcome island, we created a FREEBIES area which leads to the TILA OUTLET. Three shops are filled with clothing for our users: Women, Menswear and Fursuits.

What if you want to use the clothes? Just log in with your avatar. Go the the welcome island and walk through the FREEBIES gate. At the left is the Women’s shop and at the right the Menswear. The Furries can be found at the end, the shop with the TILA OUTLET sign on top.

Adaptive Learning and Other Educational Challenges

I subscribe to Dan Meyers’ blog because he thinks and writes with great clarity about the teaching of mathematics. I’m no mathematician, but good teaching techniques are cross-disciplinary, permitting me to apply many to the teaching of history. One of Dan’s recent posts has a title that would catch anybody’s attention: “Adaptive Learning Is An Infinite iPod That Only Plays Neil Diamond.” In the post, Dan laments his encounters with futurists, who are promoting an adaptive learning solution to solve a problem that is part of a teacher-centric classroom. For Meyers, who practices a student-centered approach, the adaptive learning solution, in its current incarnation, does not apply. Rather than elaborating, Dan sends the reader to a series of excellent Education Week blog posts by Justin Reich, where the topic is explored in more detail.
